Message from Mary Anne Malone, Parish Life Coordinator
This coming week, the Church celebrates two beautiful feasts of our Blessed Mother. The first is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The title of the Immaculate Conception recognizes Mary’s privilege of coming into the world free from sin. In 1846, Mary as the Immaculate Conception was named Patroness of the United States of America. The feast day is usually December 8th, but because December 8th falls on the Second Sunday of Advent, the feast is moved to December 9th. Our parish will celebrate with a Mass at 8:00 a.m. on Monday morning.
On December 12th we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our Lady appeared to an Aztec Indian, Juan Diego in 1531 on a hill in Mexico City. She asked Juan to go to the Bishop to ask that a church be built in her honor, but the Bishop was skeptical. Juan Diego asked Our Lady for a sign, and she told him to pick roses from the hillside to take to the Bishop. It was winter, but Juan gathered beautiful roses, put them in his tilma (his cloak) and took them to the Bishop. When he opened his cloak the roses fell out, and the Bishop and priests fell to their knees. They saw the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe miraculously imprinted on Juan Diego’s tilma. To this day, 500 years later, that cloak with the magnificent image hangs above the main altar in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We associate Our Lady of Guadalupe with Mexico, but she is the Patroness of the Americas and of the Unborn. If you don’t know much about Our Lady of Guadalupe, there are some very fascinating stories to read about the apparitions, the image on the tilma and the resulting conversion of South America to Catholicism.
Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us!
